Dermal fillers are becoming increasingly popular in the United Kingdom as more and more people are using dermal fillers to reverse the changes associated with aging skin. Because the objective is to return the skin to its original youthful state, dermal fillers have the ability of giving a more natural appearance than surgical face lifts. Dermal fillers are being used to reduce or eliminate lines and wrinkles, raise scar depressions, enhance lips, and replace soft-tissue volume loss.

As our skin gets older the dermis gradually loses its major constituents: collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Collagen acts as the major support protein for our skin, elastin allows our skin to stay firm and resist wrinkles, and hyaluronic acid helps to trap water and add volume and shape to our skin.

A variety of dermal fillers are available throughout the United Kingdom today. Some of the most popular include collagen based fillers (i.e. Evolence), hyaluronic acid based fillers (i.e. Restylane and Juvederm), poly lactic acid based fillers (i.e. Sculptra) and calcium hydroxylapatite fillers such as Radiesse. The medial and cosmetic industries are continually developing new technologies and treatments, so the new products are constantly being tested and made available, with dermal fillers being no exception. All types of filler materials can all help improve the youthful appearance and fullness of facial skin, but each of them behave in different ways and the duration of each result will last.

A thin needle is used to inject the dermal filler into the wrinkles, folds, or scars where treatment is desired. Some minor initial discomfort is normal, but should be brief, as most patients are comfortable returning to work or other daily activities immediately.

Selecting the correct Dermal Filler

The most important element to achieve successful results with dermal fillers is to realise that no one filler is ideal for all areas of the face. For instance the lips tolerate fillers differently than the cheek areas do, and not all fillers can be injected in the lips. Because of this, it is vital to research which dermal filler will work best in the area you desire treatment. In some cases, multiple fillers can be used in various places in the face to improve the entire facial aesthetic, in a procedure known as a liquid facelift.

How long does Dermal Filler result last?

The results of Dermal Fillers can last from three months to five years, depending on the filler being used. Location can also affect the duration of results, for example, fillers tend to provide results that last significantly less time in the lips (3 to 6 months), compared to nasolabial folds. Collagen based products typically provide the shortest duration of results. Hyluronic acid based fillers tend to endure for longer, with effects usually lasting from six months to one year.

Products like Sculptra is long-lasting, because it actually works by activating the production of natural collagen which fills the wrinkle or fold over time (usually 2 to 6 months), rather than plumping the area with the product itself. Since it works in this way, Sculptra is not technically classified as a dermal filler, but it is administered similarly to one and the results can last up to two years.
